SANDS CYMRU recognises that young people require access to separate services that relate to their circumstances, age, family structure and substance use (drugs, alcohol and/or solvents). The place has been developed by extending the existing Young Person’s Service offered by SANDS CYMRU. It is a separate, specialist young people's substance misuse service that offers free and confidential advice, information, help and support, for anyone aged 18 and under who is affected by substance misuse (including misuse by parents, guardians or carers)
Although we are part of SANDS CYMRU, we have our own staff team and operate from a dedicated young person’s building. We work in accordance with the legal framework (e.g. Children’s Act 1989) and the principles of good practice guidelines (e.g. HAS Report 1996, SCODA guidelines etc.). Our work recognises the importance of engaging with young people, to build trusting relationships, to maintain contact and help empower young people to reach achievable, realistic goals (depending on their “stage of change”). We also use evidence based models of working, such as solution focused, motivational interviewing, cognitive behaviour approaches.
